Lionel Train Sets History

When it comes to the best known manufacturers of scale model trains, the Lionel Manufacturing Company set the standard by which all other manufacturers are measured. Lionel train sets are renowned around the world because of  their innovation, creativity and their high standards of quality.

Founded by the young inventor, Joshua Lionel Cowen in 1900, Lionel trains sets have become a part of the American fabric for over 100 years. Mr. Cowen was born in New York City in 1877 and went on to establish one of the most successful toy companies of the 20th century. Early on he displayed a natural aptitude with electrical devices along with a strong work ethic. In 1898 he began experimenting with the development of the fuse to ignite magnesium for photographers. Subsequently he received a contract from the United States Navy for $12,000 which was the seed money for the Lionel Manufacturing Company which made fuses, low voltage motors and other devices. As a result of his continued work and experiments, he was responsible for the development of the first dry cell battery.

In an effort to increase interest in the products his company made, Cowen utilized a small electrical motor in a model train that was on display in his shop window. The results of which is history. What started out as an effort to sell other devices morphed into a new venture that we know as Lionel Trains. Soon after Cowen began making and selling Lionel train sets to individuals and retailers and in the space of two years began publishing a catalog dedicated to Lionel trains and accessories.

As the foremost pioneer in the manufacture of scale model train sets Mr. Cowen led the way in dry cell battery operated trains; as American homes gained electricity he continued his innovations by powering trains using a third rail to supply D.C. power in 1906. This innovation eliminated the problem of short circuits leading to more efficient train set operation. Mr. Cowen was also responsible for the development of a transformer to reduce household current safely for use with Lionel train sets.

In 1915 Lionel began producing ‘O’ gauge train sets in addition to its standard gauge models. In 1918, the Lionel Manufacturing Company became Lionel Cooperation and continued to grow inside and outside the United States.  Lionel remained an extremely profitable company the Depression era of the 1930’s when sales fell off sharply.

Today Lionel still is the leader in the manufacture of toy train sets.  Some of the more popular train sets are:

  • The Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer Freight Train Set
  • The Lionel Santa Fe Flyer O Gauge Train Set
  • The Lionel Polar Express Train Set
  • The Lionel A Christmas Story O-Gauge Train Set
  • The Strasburg Rail Road Steam Passenger Train Set
  • The Lionel Harry Potter Hogwarts Express
  • The Lionel Rio Grande General Set
  • The Lionel New York Central Flyer Set

These are a small sample of the train sets in production at Lionel.  Lionel also provides a full line of parts and accessories.
